Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are our products Gluten Free?
The short answer, yes! Thanks to the corn based products we use to create Pupusas and Tamales, they inherently come Gluten Free!
  • Am I able to refreeze Salvatex Foods products?
Although you can refreeze thawed out products, we highly recommend avoiding this as refreezing may unfortunately alter the taste and texture of our products. If the product is not cooked prior, you are able to refreeze our products.
  • Can Salvatex Foods products be refrigerated?
No, for the best quality possible our products must be frozen.
  • What is a Pupusa?
A pupusa is a stuffed corn tortilla with various fillings such as beans and cheese, or pork and cheese. The pupusa is a traditional Salvadoran food that can be enjoyed all year round!
  • Do you need to thaw out the pupusa before cooking?
Cooking the pupusa frozen is the best way to cook it, as thawing out the pupusa before cooking would lead to it becoming soggy and having a poor texture when fully cooked.
  • What is the shelf life for pupusa?
As per USDA guidelines, our product has a 2-year shelf life as long as proper temperature conditions are met.
  • Is it normal for a pupusa to inflate or have its filling spill out when cooking?
Yes. As not all pupusas inflate or spill out when cooking, if one were to inflate or its filling were to spill out, it is due to the heat building up inside the pupusa during the cooking process. If the filling spills out, don't worry! In El Salvador, we consider it as an extra crispy treat!
  • What’s the difference between a Mexican tamale vs a Central American tamale?
The difference between our tamale and the more well-known Mexican tamale comes from how it is prepared. Central American tamales are made with soybean oil and wrapped in banana leaf which not only adds a unique flavor to the tamale but also keeps them nice and moist; as opposed to their Mexican counterparts that are not prepared in the same way or with the same ingredients.
  • Are the banana leaves that come with the tamale edible?
No, the leaves are only to be used as a wrapping for the tamale and are not for consumption.
